First Greggs drive-thru planned for Wales

30 March 2020

The first drive-thru Greggs in Wales is planned for Swansea .

Plans have been put forward to create the bakery on land adjoining McDonalds and Starbucks along Fabian Way near Port Tennant .

At this stage it is thought it could be open 24 hours a day and would create between 20 and 30 jobs.

It comes after a 24-hour Greggs drive-thru was announced in Leicestershire in June 2018, to join the UK's first Greggs drive-thru in Greater Manchester.

A planning and retail statement for the Swansea application, submitted by agents Asbri Planning Limited, explains how the proposed site "sits in a wider area that is dominated by commercial uses" and that it is accessible by a "range of transportation options".

It says: "Greggs currently operate three units within Swansea city centre. Another unit is located at New Cut Road.

"It is clear by way of this that each unit serves a small area and multiple units in close proximity can operate successfully in close proximity to each other.

"Existing Greggs units which serve Swansea will not be closed as a result of this proposal.

"It is a positive for Swansea that the city has attracted such a proposal from a national retailer."

A spokeswoman for Greggs confirmed that the company is in the "early stages of planning a new shop in Swansea" but was unable to confirm any more details.
