Plans have been submitted for the development of a new Southampton city centre hotel on the site of a former shopping centre, intended to provide nearly 300 rooms.

Investin Southampton has earmarked a site on the corner of Lime Street/Evans Street, which once formed part of the now demolished East Street Shopping Centre.

The application proposes the construction of a six-storey townhouse building joined to an 18-storey tower, which would provide 283 hotel rooms. It is intended that the hotel will consists of a mixture of 165 standard hotel rooms and 122 apart rooms, which would include a dining room and sitting area.

It is estimated that the development would provide 60 full time jobs upon completion.

Investin Southampton has also included a provision for 33 car parking spaces, as well as 46 cycle spaces.

A planning statement filed with Southampton City Council said: "This development proposal will bring significant benefits to Southampton through the provision of a high-quality new hotel on previously developed land and will boost the local tourism industry."
