Hotel plans for historic former police station in Leicester recommended for approval, as well as a new hotel in the city

09 July 2020

Proposals to transform a former police station in Leicester, which dates back to the turn of the 19th century, into a hotel have been recommended for approval.

The building on the corner of Holden Street and Loughborough Road in the Belgrave area has been earmarked for the project by Leicester-based Platinum Homes Development.

Leicester City Council's planning committee is set to meet virtually on Wednesday 15 July to vote on the application.

A council document published ahead of the meeting said: "The proposed refurbishment and beneficial use of this building is welcomed.

"The proposed hotel use is not a fundamentally unsuitable use for the building or the location.

"Matters relating to highway safety and impact on neighbours can be dealt with by condition."

New hotel recommended for approval
The green light has also been recommended for a new hotel in Leicester, which will also see the amended plans decided next week.

The site of vegetarian restaurant Indigo on Melton Road has been earmarked for the multimillion-pound scheme which also include a restaurant and banqueting hall as well as 125 bedrooms.

The 122,439 sq ft site would also 133 car parking spaces, an increase of 73.

If approved, the new hotel would have 77,532 sq ft of internal space and create ten full-time and 12 part-time jobs.

The proposals for the five-storey building include the demolition of the restaurant.

A council document published ahead of the meeting said: "Consideration has been given to potentially adverse impacts such as the loss of trees and an increase in traffic and associated air pollution.

"On the other hand it will have benefits including providing services and employment, a landmark building, a more efficient use of land, improved landscaping, and a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) that will reduce the risk of flooding.

"Concerns such as the implications for wildlife have been addressed and will be mitigated."

The scheme has been designed by London-based Architects Network.
