Green light for £500m mixed-use Embankment scheme to include hotel

Lambeth Council’s Planning Applications Committee has voted in favour of U+I and the London Fire Brigade’s £500m mixed-use proposals for the redevelopment of 8 Albert Embankment.

The 8 Albert Embankment scheme, designed by architect Pilbrow & Partners, will deliver a new mixed-use community that offers significant benefits to the local community.

The transformed site will provide a new fire station for Lambeth, with modern facilities for firefighters, and a new permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum.

Proposals also include 443 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable; 1,264 jobs across 100,000 sq ft of new workspace and new public spaces across the site. The iconic Grade II listed former London Fire Brigade HQ will also be restored to house a new fire station, museum, rooftop restaurant and hotel.

Speaking after the decision, Karen McCormick from U+I, said: “This is a big step towards the transformation of 8 Albert Embankment, where new homes, workspaces and public spaces will regenerate a public site that has mostly lain vacant for ten years. The development will have a contemporary fire station at its heart as well as a permanent London Fire Brigade Museum. The museum will be an important educational centre and will provide a world class collection which tells the story of firefighting, from the Great Fire of London to the present day. The plans follow extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders and demonstrate U+I’s commitment to delivering great places in order to create positive social and economic change.”
